HOTEL DEATH STAR
THE DAYLIGHT ft. Asteriska

Teaming up with fellow musician and friend Asteriska for HDS’s latest release turned out to be the perfect match. The genesis of this collaboration arrived after Phil brought a fresh demo into the studio. He already had the seed in his mind that this was to be performed as a duet with a female artist.
“I recorded and produced a duet years ago with New Zealand female artist Hanna Grace for the single ‘In the Rain’, and absolutely loved the experience. I felt this new HDS song had duet written all over it!” - Phil Stoodley

Andreas suggested Asteriska, a very talented singer/ songwriter from Jakarta. He also works as her producer/ co-songwriter for some of her solo releases, the match was seamless.

Asteriska’s vocals set out to grab you and not let go. The singer’s voice is part throwback to the jazz legends of old and part modern sensibility with a haunting twist. A member of the energetic rock group Barasuara, Asteriska has been a staple of the Jakarta music scene for years. While on stage with Barasuara her electric energy and fierce vocals hold nothing back but if you are lucky enough to catch her solo performances, you’ll be treated to a different side of this enchanted singer entirely. Already with two solo albums to her name, “Distance” and “Past Possessions”, Asteriska’s original music blends jazz and folk with her trademark combination of soothing melodies and powerful emotions.

The acoustic version of The Daylight is due out for release on 24th September. On this stripped down version,  Andreas performs mandolin, ukulele and string arrangements, with  Phil on acoustic guitar and percussion. This version of the song is reminiscent of the Led Zeppelin track Going to California, with overtones of The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby.

PHIL STOODLEY
Based in Bali, Phil performs regularly on the island along with yearly shows in his home country New Zealand, as well as in Australia and Japan. With over 20 years in the music business, he has composed music for TV, films, and commercials, produced various albums and played alongside international artists such as Velvet Revolver, Simple Minds, Jimmy Barnes and Neil Finn. A solo EP is set for release in 2021 hailing back to his old school rock and swagger roots. He is also the co-founder of ‘The Bali Rooftop’, a start-up project that promotes Indonesian and touring artists performing in Bali.

ANDREAS ARIANTO
Multi-instrumentalist Andreas Arianto has produced and engineered rock to pop acts, composed and conducted symphony orchestras, and written scores for major motion films and TV. In 2008, he was orchestrator and conductor for Indonesia’s biggest rock band, SLANK’s six-city tour.
His composition and production is credited to artists including The Dead Bachelors, Ungu, Asteriska (Barasuara), Budapest Scoring Orchestra, and The Raid 2 movie.

THE GENESIS OF ‘HOTEL DEATH STAR’
Forging the skills of singer-songwriter Phil Stoodley and composer-producer Andreas Arianto, this collab was spawned in the cold mountains of snow-drenched Japan early 2020. Caught in a storm, Phil scratched out melodic beats in the room of a hotel that inhaled the weather, rather than protected him from it.
 
Bringing the rough recordings back to his home in Bali, Phil teamed up with Andreas and together they shaped the new sounds into a writhing pulse of deep-house while keeping the grit of its birthplace firmly etched within its grinding drones and beats.
